Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of the club’s next manager with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to take over on a three-year deal with the option of a fourth.

The 52-year-old Dutchman will take over at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, with Ralf Rangnick taking interim charge.

Ten Hag has led Ajax since 2017, winning two Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cup crowns as well as leading them into the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

United have not won any silverware since their Europa League triumph in 2017, enduring one of the club’s leanest periods in recent memory.

United football director John Murtough said: “During the past four years at Ajax, Erik has proved himself to be one of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe, renowned for his teams attractive, attacking football and commitment to youth.

“In our conversations with Erik leading up to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to be competing at, and his drive and determination to achieve that.”

The Red Devils were also linked with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino but ten Hag joins, subject to work visa requirements.

“It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead,” ten Hag said.

“I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

“It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.”
