Manchester United have made their interest in Rennes starlet Eduardo Camavinga known and are set to meet with the midfielder’s entourage next week.
Deemed to be one of France’s brightest young talents, Eduardo Camavinga, 18, has just 12 months remaining on his current contract at Rennes. The Ligue 1 club are likely to be forced to cash in on him this summer, with the teenager’s priority is to remain in France. As things stand, Paris Saint-Germain are the frontrunners for his signature.
However, Manchester United are scheduled to hold talks with Camavinga’s representatives next week in a bid to convince the burgeoning talent to move to Old Trafford. Rennes value their asset at €100m, but due to Camavinga’s delicate contract situation, there is hope that their demands will come down in the coming weeks.
Regardless of his young age, Camavinga has already made 82 first-team appearances for Rennes so far. He is already a France international having scored on his Les Blues debut in a 4-2 victory over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League last September.
Meanwhile, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to reinforce his squad over the summer transfer window to compete with neighbours Manchester City for the Premier League title next season. The Red Devils finished second on the table last season and lost the Europa League final to Villarreal in Gdansk, Poland.
Paul Pogba enters the final year of his contract at Old Trafford
Paul Pogba’s contract at Manchester United is set to expire in the summer of 2022. It means this is the last summer the Mancunian giants can sell him for a substantial fee.
The Red Devils were forced to trigger a 12-month extension in his current deal last year and remain keen on tying him down to an improved long-term contract. Solskjaer wants Pogba to stay at the club beyond his current deal; however, the 28-year-old, who is currently with France for the Euro 2020, hasn’t shown willingness to pen fresher terms.
In fact, United are growing gradually fearful of the French midfielder running down his contract and leaving the club on a free transfer next year. He has no interest in discussing his future while away with France for the European Championships.
Eduardo Camavinga could be a potential long-term replacement for Pogba
Manchester United’s interest in Eduardo Camavinga could mean that they are planning for life without Pogba, who hasn’t shown any signs of penning a new deal.
Based on Camavinga’s performances in Ligue 1, it is easy to see why the Red Devils want his signature. He is a box-to-box midfielder but is more than capable of playing in a deeper role, something that would interest the Red Devils with Nemanja Matic ageing.
A tough tackler with good game reading sense and passing ability, the 18-year-old might also be the solution to Solskjaer-managed United’s defensive midfield quandaries. With Pogba entering the final year of his contract and Matic no more a spring chicken, roping in a player like Camavinga would be of great help for the Red Devils.
The Frenchman could be a valuable long-term asset for the future and still has plenty of time to develop. Thus, if a deal works out for Camavinga, by all means, would be a sensational signing by United.
