Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola remains on track to achieve the one thing that has eluded him during his time in England so far.
City’s 4-1 victory over Belgian side Club Brugge at the Etihad on Wednesday kept the Citizens top of Group A, a point ahead of French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
The Champions League is the one major trophy to have eluded Guardiola during his time in Manchester.
Despite rightfully being hailed as one of the world’s best managers, the Spaniard has not won Europe’s senior cup competition since his days in Catalunya with Barcelona.
The former Bayern Munich manager may be running out of time to achieve the feat with City however, as he has previously implied that he will depart the club when his current deal expires in the summer of 2023.
That would mean that this would be Guardiola’s penultimate attempt at winning the Champions League, although he has won a total of 10 trophies with the Manchester club since arriving in 2016.
Now, however, it appears that his current employers are already planning for life after the Spaniard departs.
As per The Leicester Mercury, Brendan Rodgers has already been touted as the successor to Guardiola.
The report suggests that the Leicester boss has already been approached by City, who have been admirers of the Northern Irishman for several years now.
Times Journalist Northhcroft revealed that Rodgers is aware of City’s interest.
“Manchester City have been working on Brendan Rodgers for years,” he told the Transfer Window Podcast.
“He has been on their list for years.
“He knows that they like him, they let him know that they like him on the basis that if we ever come to change Pep Guardiola, or when Pep leaves, we’d be interested in you.”
Rodgers has achieved success at both Celtic and the Foxes in recent years, having won two league titles and five cups with the Scottish side, and then guided Leicester to their first ever FA Cup triumph with victory over Chelsea in last year’s final.
The former Liverpool boss is currently contracted to the West Midlands side until 2025, but the prospect of managing one of England’s biggest and most successful clubs would likely be of interest to him.
