He was considered one of the senior players in the Sundowns team but his departure doesn’t come as a major surprise because he was definitely not in the plans of the new technical team last season.

Mabunda made no appearance for the Brazilians under the tutelage of both Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena.

In an interview with Soccer Laduma, Mabunda’s agent Basia Michaels confirmed that Sundowns had an option on the midfielder’s contract but they decided not to take it.

“Yes, I can confirm that Tiyani, after seven years as a Sundowns player, will be leaving the club,” said Michaels.

The 33-year-old was previously linked with a possible move to Swallows FC, and it remains to be seen if that door is still open now that he has left Sundowns.

“Tiyani is an incredible talent, and we have no doubt he will still be able to play at the highest level. We want to thank Sundowns for all the great memories that include five league titles, the CAF Champions League and the Super Cup.

Michaels added: “Very few players can boast that kind of medal haul during their career, and Tiyani has clearly had an illustrious one. But it’s not over yet, it’s far from over.

“Tiyani and I have had various conversations, and all of them lead to his ability in being able to do God’s work through the sport. We will confirm details of his next chapter when it is appropriate,” concluded Michaels.
