Mabbutt tips Rodon for huge role at Spurs

Former Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt has exclusively told Football FanCast that he believes Joe Rodon has the potential to develop into a “top” Premier League player for Spurs.

The Welsh defender arrived from Swansea City on Deadline Day, but has generally struggled for regular opportunities since making the switch from South Wales.

Missing out on Tottenham’s Europa League squad, plus being cup-tied in the Carabao Cup having featured earlier in the competition for the Swans, has restricted Rodon to appearing in only the Premier League and FA Cup.

He did make three league starts in the bounce back in January, but was taken out of the firing-line following a mistake in Spurs’ defeat to Liverpool, only to return for Sunday’s victory against Aston Villa – his first outing for nearly two months.

Despite a tough start to his career in north London, Mabbutt, who made more than 500 appearances for Tottenham himself, remains confident that Rodon will be a success.

He told Football FanCast:

“It’s been difficult for Joe. Before he came to Spurs, I had seen him a number of times. He has got great potential, he can develop into a top Premier League player for us. Nothing I have seen so far has not changed that impression at all.”

Having come back into the team after a long absence, Rodon will be hoping his performance at Villa Park was enough for him to keep his place when Tottenham return to action against Newcastle following the international break.
