SANTA CLARA — The one game Adam Garwood didn’t lift Los Gatos on his shoulders, the senior running back still pushed the Wildcats’ winning touchdown across the goal line.
Los Gatos trailed Wilcox by as many as 19 points and did not lead until the final 2 minutes, when, with an assist from Garwood, senior receiver Kyle Pinkham ran, then rammed, into the end zone after hauling in a pass from senior quarterback Alex Grado. The Wildcats scored the final 20 points of their 20-19 victory, which delivered them their first win over Wilcox in four seasons and at least a share of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division title.
“When we knew we were going to play five games, the guys said let’s go 5-0, why not?” coach Mark Krail said. “Our defense played great, threw a shut out in the second half. Our running game struggled, and that’s what we’ve hung out hats on for the first three games, so we had to throw it, and even when we threw it, it turned out disastrous at times. But to these kids’ credit, we kept getting stops and getting the ball back and kept making plays.”
Wilcox opened a 19-0 advantage in the first half with a trio of interceptions, including a pick-six, while also shutting down Garwood and Los Gatos’ prolific rushing attack. Garwood, who entered the game with a CCS-best 467 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, was limited to only 20 yards and ran the ball only three times after halftime.
Instead, it was Grabo who led a pair of two-minute drills at the end of each half that accounted for two of the Wildcats’ three touchdowns.
With less than 4 minutes to play, the Los Gatos defense forced Wilcox to punt. Grabo, his team trailing 19-14, instantly completed three passes to take Los Gatos across midfield, then connected for 16 yards to senior Carson Gardner to bring them within two yards of the red zone. On the next play, Grabo found Pinkham in the flat, and the senior receiver raced to the end zone with Garwood trailing close behind.

“I knew from the first snap (of the drive) that we were going to put it in the end zone somehow,” Grabo said.
The senior quarterback completed 19 of 25 passes for 275 yards, a stark departure from the Wildcats’ typically run-oriented offense.
“I think it speaks a little to the balance of our team,” said Krail. “Just because we don’t throw it a lot doesn’t mean we can’t.”
With 1:51 to go, Los Gatos led for the first time all night. Including last season’s 37-0 loss, it was the first time Los Gatos held a lead over Wilcox since 2018.
The ball was in the hands of Wilcox quarterback Jesse Gutierrez, who got the ball as far as the Wildcats’ 37-yard line. But eventually faced with a decisive fourth-and-18, Gutierrez’s heave downfield was picked off by senior Ty Goldsbury.
Both offenses featured run-heavy attacks and were forced to adapt after falling behind. Only Los Gatos was able to pull it off.
“Obviously it’s impressive to come back from that kind of deficit,” Wilcox coach Paul Rosa said. “It’s one of those games where you knew they weren’t going to go away. They were a little bit sloppy in the beginning. We were really sloppy at the end.”
Wilcox had not lost a SCVAL contest since 2017, a winning streak in league play that spanned 18 games.
Junior Luther K. Glenn rushed for a game-leading 173 yards, but the rest of the Chargers managed a combined 72 yards. Six of the Chargers’ points came off an interception by senior Rashaun Bowden, who took that turnover to the house and came up with another interception on the following drive.
The play that turned the tide, according to Rosa, was a third-and-goal from the 1-yard line. After burning nearly the full clock of the third quarter, the Chargers were on the brink of extending their advantage four scores to one. But a false start pushed them back to the 6-yard line, and the Chargers came away empty handed after a missed field goal.
“We took the whole quarter pretty much moving the ball and then we didn’t punch it in,” Rosa said. “That was a huge play. … It came down to mistakes, and we made more than they did.”
