Former Leicester City winger Keith Gillespie has suggested that Foxes’ defender Jonny Evans still has the quality to play for Manchester United.
The Northern-Irishman, who joined the East-Midlanders from West Bromwich Albion in a bargain deal in 2018, has played a key role in the team under compatriot Brendan Rodgers.
He has been a virtual ever present in the starting line-up as the Foxes continue to challenge for a UEFA Champions League place, highlighting how good of a signing he has been, especially considering that he was signed for a reported fee of just £3.5m.
Who is Leicester City’s best centre-back?
Wes Morgan
Jonny Evans
Wesley Fofana
Caglar Soyuncu
This is all the more remarkable considering that just months earlier, Manchester City had a bid of approximately £18m turned down by the Baggies and at the time he was rated at £13.5m.
Since arriving at the King Power Stadium, the now 33-year-old has made 104 appearances for Leicester, appearing in every single Premier League match throughout the 2019/20 season.
His displays have certainly not gone unnoticed either, with Gillespie labelling him as a “Rolls Royce” and saying that he would still include him in the Manchester United defence when speaking exclusively to Football FanCast.
Evans’ impact on the pitch is certainly notable as well. In his time at Leicester, he has missed a total of 20 Premier League matches, whether that be through injury, suspension or simply being left out. The Foxes have only won eight of those, giving them a 40% win rate when the defender isn’t in the line-up.
Meanwhile, of the matches Evans has played, the Foxes have racked up a 48% win rate – a marked improvement when he takes to the pitch.
Now rated at £6.3m, the signing of the defender looks better and better each season, especially with Gillespie’s calls for him to be back in the Manchester United team.
