Leeds United journalist Beren Cross has provided an update when it comes to the club’s reported pursuit of Lewis O’Brien.
A recent report from The Sun has claimed that Leeds and Huddersfield Town are in discussions for the 22-year-old, with the report claiming Marcelo Bielsa’s men will have to pay £10m to make the move happen.
Would you like to see Leeds sign O’Brien this summer?
Yes
No
The midfielder played in all bar four of the Terriers’ Championship games last season, scoring three goals and providing three assists as they stayed in the division with a six-point cushion over the relegation zone.
Talking about the deal on a Facebook Live video, when asked whether there were any new signings on the way, Cross confirmed that Leeds United were indeed interested in him, but that it might take a while for any deal to be completed.
“There’s nothing imminent by the sounds of it. Lewis O’Brien, from what I’ve read is somebody who does interest them, but it doesn’t sound like it’s anywhere near down the track. It sounds like if that one were to happen, they would still need to jump through a fair few hoops from this point onwards.
“Of course, things change very, very quickly and Victor Orta’s rarely off the phone, but from what I’ve heard, it doesn’t sound that one is particularly close, even if they do like him.”
TIF Thoughts on Beren Cross’ comments on Lewis O’Brien and Leeds United…
It does appear as if this deal could be one that drags out a little bit longer, possibly until the very last few days of the transfer window, which is a little bit concerning.
Whilst O’Brien does already have some competitive minutes under his belt, playing all 120 minutes of his side’s penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup, when it comes to playing and training under Bielsa, there is another level that needs to be reached.
So if he’s set to play a part in the Leeds team this year, be it big or small, it’s imperative that he is brought in as soon as possible to get up to speed with Bielsa methods so that he can make an impact at the earliest possible opportunity.
