Leeds, Everton and Newcastle in three-way battle to sign player with 33 England caps | Shoot

There’s now less than two months until the January transfer window opens to allow teams to strengthen their squads for the second half of the season.

One player who reportedly could potentially be making a move come the turn of 2022 is Chelsea’s Ross Barkley.

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds United, Everton and Newcastle United all have an interest in signing the 27-year-old.

The midfielder has found regular first-team football hard to come by at Stamford Bridge following a switch from Everton in January 2018.

But although his Blues career looked over after an underwhelming loan spell at Aston Villa last term, the 33-time England international has bounced back to earn eight appearances this term under Thomas Tuchel.

Barkley struggled in the second half of a season-long loan at Villa Park.

The report claims that Newcastle are leading the race to sign the playmaker but that Leeds and former club Everton are also interested in doing an initial loan deal with option to buy preferred.

Despite being in Tuchel’s squad plans so far this term, Barkley will know that he is in need of regular first-team football if he’s to force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The Chelsea man was a regular for Southgate in the Euro 2020 qualifiers and scored twice in his last international outing as the Three Lions beat Bulgaria 6-0 in October 2019.

Now with just 18 months remaining on his Blues deal, January could be the right time to end his chapter at Stamford Bridge in favour of a fresh challenge elsewhere.
