Kilmarnock fan dies from cardiac arrest after Ayrshire derby as son thanks first responders

The son of a Kilmarnock fan who died from cardiac arrest following the Ayrshire derby has thanked the first responders who battled to save his dad.

The supporter received treatment after taking unwell on Rugby Road just outside Rugby Park following the game with Ayr United on Wednesday night.

Medics tended to the man and he was taken to Crosshouse Hospital where he tragically passed away.

His son Scott McCue has taken to social media to thank those who rushed to the aid of his father.

He says that although his dad didn’t survive, their heroic actions allowed him to say goodbye.

In a post on Twitter, Scott said: “My dad. Devastated doesn’t do it justice.

“Thank you to Kilmarnock, Ayr United and all of those who have noted their condolences.

“Special thanks to those who rushed to his aid. Although he didn’t survive, your actions afforded us the chance to say goodbye.”

Following the devastating news, tributes have flooded in from the Scottish footballing world for the Killie supporter.

Kilmarnock defender Ashton Taylor said: “So sorry to hear this! Thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.”

Former Killie star Mark Connolly said: “I’m extremely sorry for your loss Scott, thoughts to you and all your family at this difficult time”

Presenter Robert Borthwick said: “So sorry to hear this, Scott. Condolences to you and your family.”

Scottish football page Oldfirmfacts said: “I’m so sorry to hear this Scott. My thoughts are with you and your family.”

The Open Goal podcast tweeted: “Sorry to hear this, Scott. Thoughts are with you and your family.”

A statement from Kilmarnock FC said: “It is with immense sadness that we inform fans of the passing of a Kilmarnock supporter following last night’s Ayrshire Derby.

“The fan suffered a cardiac arrest and received treatment on Rugby Road following last night’s game. After being treated by medics at the scene, the supporter was transferred to Crosshouse Hospital where he sadly passed away.

“Our condolences and the thoughts of everyone at Kilmarnock Football Club go out to his family, friends and loved ones.”

A statement on Ayr United’s Twitter added: “Our condolences and the thoughts of everyone at Ayr United Football Club go out to his family, friends and loved ones.”

Arbroath FC tweeted: “So sorry to hear this tragic news. Thoughts to the family and everyone at the club. RIP.”
