Speaking to reporters after Bayern Munich’s 5-2 win against Benfica in the Champions League, head coach Julian Nagelsmann hailed his team’s performance as they qualified for the knockout stages.
“It was fun to watch,” said Nagelsmann. “Of course we conceded two goals. We discussed that separately, that we would defend differently but overall it was an incredibly good game from us. Better than the last few weeks, we had very good control and pace going forward.
“Now it’s about consolidating our form. We still have two games in the group stage. We’ve qualified for the last 16. It’s a good first step but the knockout games will come thick and fast and you have to be ready for it. There are good teams in the competition but we are one of them.”
Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick on his 100th appearance in the Champions League with goals also coming from Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sané.
Nagelsmann missed four games after testing positive for Covid-19 but returned to the dugout on Tuesday night following a negative result.
