A JOHNSTONE man who repeatedly charged at police officers and kicked their riot shields as Rangers supporters celebrated winning the league title has been fined £500.
Dad-of-two Gordon Allison lashed out in George Square, Glasgow, on May 15 this year.
The 47-year-old engineer was snared after officers checked CCTV footage from the scene, where jubilant Gers fans had gathered for a Scottish Premiership title party.
Allison later blamed a “cocktail” of medication and alcohol for his behaviour.
He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court today, where he admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person fear or alarm.
The court heard conventional police were stood down and replaced with public order officers in order to “control the situation” in George Square.
Officers carrying shields who formed a public order line came under attack after 8pm.
A review of CCTV footage identified Allison as one of the culprits.
Prosecutor Jennifer Sillars told the court: “Officers were attempting to disperse a large crowd causing disorder.
“Allison was on the roadway at the south-west corner of George Square, standing in front of a shield.
“He was caught on the footage acting in a disorderly manner by charging towards the officers in an aggressive manner and kicking riot shields.
“CCTV also showed him charging at police while trying to be held back by an unknown member of the public.
“He was seen kicking shields and appeared to fall backwards. He charged towards the public order line again and kicked at the shields.”
Allison later voluntarily handed himself into police.
Miss Sillars called for a football banning order to be imposed but this was refused.
Stephanie Grieve, defending, told the court that Allison is also a director of a company owned by his father and regrets his actions in George Square.
She added: “Rangers were successful that day and he was a member of the public who did not attend the game.
“The mix of alcohol and medication provided a cocktail. He doesn’t remember the event and, on reviewing the CCTV, he is horrified to see himself.”
