John Souttar is reportedly a pre-contract transfer target for Rangers.
And the Ibrox club have made their move in an attempt to persuade the Scotland defender to move to Govan.
HIs Hearts deal expires at the end of the season and is already wanted by a host of English Championship clubs.
Blackburn have already offered him a pre-contract while Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United are also keen to sign him.
But the Glasgow Times report that Rangers hope to see off that competition and bring him to Ibrox.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst made his first signing of the January window by signing James Sands on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy.
And they will look to add Souttar’s pre-contract to that as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
Doubts remain over Connor Goldson ’s future while Niko Katic is out on loan at Hajduk Split and Jack Simpson looks likely to leave.
Add in the injury records of Filip Helander and Leon Balogun and centre back is a key area for them to strengthen.
Souttar has been identified as a bosman target as Rangers look to reject a move to the English Championship.
Van Bronckhorst will have some funds to spend after Nathan Patterson’s record breaking move to Everton.
If they do convince Souttar to sign a pre-contract, they could look to bring him to Rangers in January.
Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has previously warned that it would need to be a big offer to get him out of Tynecastle in the January window, as they look to challenge for a European spot.
But things could become complicated if he signs a pre-contract with a club in the same league.
Rangers have made the most of the pre-contract in recent seasons, with the likes of Glen Kamara, Jordan Jones and Scott Wright all agreeing moves in recent seasons.
