Jimmy Dunne has departed Burnley to sign for QPR on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
Having started out at Manchester United, Dunne has spent the last five seasons at Turf Moor where he graduated through the youth ranks to become a regular part of the first-team last season with seven appearances and a goal on league debut at Leicester in a 4-2 defeat.
Dunne however chose to depart at ‘the end of his existing contract’ despite the Clarets offering a fresh contract, which meant that the club was entitled to a fee from QPR to allow Dunne to complete his move.
Explaining his decision to depart Burnley and Premier League to join Sky Bet Championship’s QPR, Dunne said: “It’s a massive step for me. With the push that the lads had during the second half of last season it would be nice to be part of something like that this season.”
Having enjoyed loan spells away at various clubs like Accrington Stanley, Hearts and Sunderland during his stay in Lancashire, Dunne believes that those experiences have been “really good” for his development but feels that he needs “to go on a journey with someone” as part of a fresh project.
Dunne also iterated that he sees his main position as a defender and expects the Championship to provide a difficult test, commenting: “This league is going to test me and there is a lot of work for me to do but if I can concentrate on my defending, I am sure the ball playing will follow.”
Having recently signed Norwich City’s Sam McCallum on loan, manager – Mark Warburton is happy with Dunne’s arrival, praising the 23 year-old’s versatility, saying: “He can play anywhere across the back three – left, right or centre – and that gives us great flexibility.”
Warburton also noted Dunne’s impressive “great physicality” and ball control skills, adding: “he looks after the ball well and plays with a real passion and energy.”
QPR will start the 2021-22 Sky Bet Championship season at home to Millwall on Saturday 7 August in a huge London derby.
