Before Euro 2020 started, Italy were not one of the main favourites to win the tournament – they were expected to go far, but there were other teams who were more likely to collect the trophy come July. However, Mancini’s men have been ruthless in their start to the tournament, wrapping up qualification after two games and going into their final match with Wales in charge of Group A. Consecutive 3-0 wins over Turkey and Switzerland mean Italy need just a point to secure top spot and set up a last-16 tie with either Ukraine or Austria.
After a draw in their opening game against Switzerland, Wales also find themselves in a very good position for qualification, needing just one point to finish in the top two. Rob Page’s side bounced back from the disappointing opener with a 2-0 win over Wales to open up a three point gap over Switzerland. With four points on the board, it’s hard to see Wales not qualifying for the last-16 even as one of the best third-placed teams, but they will want the security of automatic qualification. A win for Wales would see them top the group, while a draw confirms second and a last-16 tie against Group B’s runner-up.

Giorgio Chiellini picked up an injury early on against Switzerland and is expected to miss the game against Wales, though it isn’t too serious. Marco Verratti is available for selection. Wales, meanwhile, have no injury concerns.

Players to watch:
- Italy: Although Italy’s attackers have received most of the plaudits for their start at Euro 2020, Jorginho has also been excellent, as the silent metronome in Mancini’s team. The Chelsea midfielder has been at the base of everything positive for Italy, providing a vital link between the defence and the rest of their team. In Italy’s two matches so far, Jorginho has attempted 152 passes and completed 140, with an accuracy of 92.11%. Only five players have completed more passes at Euro 2020 so far than Jorginho, while 40 of his attempted passes have been in the final third. The nature of Jorginho’s job in an Italy team so bright means he is likely to continue against Wales, even if Mancini rotates, and the midfielder will be key in securing top spot.
- Wales: On the other side of the midfield battle will be Aaron Ramsey, but the Welshman’s role is slightly different. Ramsey plays as Wales’ most advanced central midfielder and joins Gareth Bale, Daniel James and Kieffer Moore to form a four-man attack that looks to hit opponents from all angles. Against Turkey it was Ramsey who opened the scoring just before half-time, making an excellent off-the-ball run from deep to get onto the end of Bale’s pass. It was an untracked run, highlighting just how good Ramsey is for Wales when he plays just behind the striker. But he can be better. Ramsey has had more Big Chances than any other Wales player at Euro 2020 so far with three, but he has missed two – with only Ciro Immobile (three) missing more.
