Round Three Against the Red Bulls
Inter Miami CF will return to Red Bull Arena for a second consecutive match after losing 1-0 against CF Montréal there on Saturday, July 3. Saturday’s fixture will be the third in Club history against the Red Bulls after the teams met twice in Inter Miami’s inaugural 2020 season. The Club will seek to repeat the positive outcome earned in last year’s visit, when Gonzalo Higuaín scored an impressive game-winning free kick in the 81st minute to claim a 1-2 victory.
Potential Debuts
The club’s newest additions, goalkeeper Nick Marsman, defender Kieran Gibbs and attacker Indiana Vassilev are all eligible to make their Inter Miami debuts this Saturday. Marsman joins the team after a two-year stint with Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam, while Gibbs joins after finishing his four-year stint with English side West Bromwich Albion. Both Marsman and Gibbs have signed with the team through the 2023 MLS season. Recent addition Vassilev joins the team on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.
Familiar Faces
The match may feature reunions between former teammates or rivals for Inter Miami and New York Red Bull players. Christian Makoun may face former Venezuelan teammate Cristhian Cásseres Jr., who he played alongside for two years at various levels of the national team. Most recently, the pair took the field together in an international friendly against the Brazilian U-23 team in 2019.
Inter Miami defender Ryan Shawcross may face former Stoke City teammate Tom Edwards. The pair shared the pitch for two years at the latter end of Shawcross’ tenure with the club.
Lastly, Inter Miami’s Víctor Ulloa may face former teammate Frankie Amaya. The midfielders played with each other in 11 matches for FC Cincinnati during Ulloa’s short stint with the team. Together the duo helped the team reach the US Open Cup in 2019. Inter Miami players may also face former teammate Andrés Reyes who played with the Club during its inaugural season.
New York Red Bulls’ Record
The Red Bulls enter this week’s fixture after drawing a 1-1 at home against the Philadelphia Union in their previous game. In 2021, the Red Bull’s have recorded five wins, two draws and five losses, with Cásseres Jr. leading the team with four goals so far this season.
