January 19, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Inter Miami CF News Release

Inter Miami CF announced today it has re-signed defender/midfielder Brek Shea to a new one-year deal running through the 2022 season, with a club option for 2023. After featuring for the club in its two first Major League Soccer (MLS) seasons, Shea returns to the First Team roster ahead of the 2022 MLS campaign.

“We’re thrilled to have reached an agreement with Brek to return to our club. He’s a player that made key contributions on the pitch for Inter Miami throughout our first two seasons and adds talent and valuable experience to the First Team roster. We look forward to seeing him help us reach our goals in 2022,” said Inter Miami CF Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

Shea rejoins Inter Miami after totalling 43 appearances, 23 of them starts, and adding six goals in the first two years with the club. The versatile veteran has also played over 250 MLS matches and more than 80 games on the international stage across all levels with the United States Men’s National Team. The 31-year-old has a winning track record, having won the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup, in which he scored the winning goal in the final.

In the club’s inaugural campaign in 2020, the Texas native scored four goals in 13 appearances, six of them starts, helping the club clinch its historic playoff berth. In 2021, Shea had a strong presence in the team, being deployed as both a left back or left winger at different times throughout the campaign. He totalled 30 appearances, 17 as a member of the starting XI, in Inter Miami’s second season in MLS, registering two goals in the process

Shea has also featured at the international level for the U.S. Men’s National Team. In total, he was capped 34 times for his country, tallying four goals and two assists. Notably, he featured prominently at the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup, where he appeared in every match of the team’s unbeaten march to the title and scored the winning goal in the final.

After being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft out of high school, the left-footed player featured for MLS sides FC Dallas, Orlando City SC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Atlanta United FC. Shea featured for FC Dallas from 2008 until 2012, earning 2011 MLS Best XI and 2011 MLS All-Star honors while appearing in 103 games, scoring 19 goals. In January 2013, Shea signed for English Premier League club Stoke City and made his debut against Fulham on Feb. 23. In January 2014, Shea was loaned to English Football League Championship side FC Barnsley before being loaned to Championship side Birmingham City in September of that year.

Shea returned to home soil in December 2014 as one of the marquee signings for Orlando City ahead of its 2015 MLS inaugural campaign. He played 46 matches between the 2015 and 2016 seasons before being traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC as a Designated Player in 2017. After featuring in 56 games in two campaigns, including three in the 2017 MLS playoffs, Shea was signed by Atlanta United for the 2019 season.
