Ian Durrant praises Rangers chiefs for putting a stop to the sad times and recalls previous flag day glories

After a tough last decade, Rangers legend Ian Durrant believes a flag unfurling at Ibrox will be just the tonic for fans as they look forward not back.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions limiting crowd sizes in Scottish football, the Light Blues decided against having flag day on their first home game of the new Premiership season, as per tradition.

Instead, the Gers have elected to do it this coming Sunday on the visit of Motherwell to Govan in front of a capacity attendance.

Former midfielder Durrant has hailed the Ibrox board for their strategy and in general he’s impressed by the incumbent chiefs.

Durrant was part of the coaching staff the last time the club had won the league back in 2011 but administration and relegation to Division 3 soon followed.

Durrant stuck around with Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall before eventually leaving and he’s just delighted the club is being run properly again.

The current board has Douglas Park as chairman and he was part of the group that helped wrestle back control alongside Dave King and John Gilligan back in 2015.

And the Rangers hero told the Rangers Museum Lotto website: “The unfurling of the flag was always the first day of the season and I enjoyed many during my Rangers career. This one will be really special and it’s great the club delayed it so as many fans as possible could see it after the Covid restrictions eased.

“Having the crowd back at Ibrox and a full house in to see it will be great.

“Stopping Celtic doing 10 in a Row was important and Rangers thoroughly deserved their 55th title after the way they played last season. So, there will be a great atmosphere at Ibrox this weekend. It’s always great to see a championship winning flag being unfurled and it has been a long time coming.

“But it’s important to go out and win the game too. Motherwell will be determined to come and spoil the party so I am sure Steven Gerrard and the players will be well up for the match.

“The atmosphere will be electric, we have waited a long time to celebrate a top-flight title and all the Rangers fans will be buzzing. I’m sure everyone at Ibrox will have a great day.”

Durrant recalled the preceding title celebration in 2011, particularly the send-off given to Ibrox icon Walter Smith.

He continued: “I have great memories from our last title win at Kilmarnock. We knew the gaffer was leaving and Coisty told all the boys to make sure we win the title so the old yin could go out on a high.

“We won the game in the first 20 minutes and it was a fantastic afternoon. There was some celebration on the bus ride back from Kilmarnock that day I’ll tell you that!

“Fans were lining the motorway and all the streets as we made our way back to Ibrox. Seeing all the supporters waiting for us outside the stadium was something special. Looking back, it really was an unbelievable day and we couldn’t have known what would happen after that.

“It was a great send off for Walter, he’s a really special man and it was a fitting way for him to retire.

“Our 55th title was also very special and it has been a long time coming. There have been a lot of sad days and a lot of good people lost their jobs due to the way the club was run after Walter left.

“But we have good people at the club now with Douglas Park and John Bennett following on the good work from men like Dave King and John Gilligan so we are in a good place.

“They got the club back on an even keel and the appointment of Steven Gerrard was a really positive one. It took a couple of years and a few transfer windows but he has assembled a really talented squad who are now winners.”
