How Zinedine Zidane could help Manchester United land Mauricio Pochettino

Manchester United need a new manager

Following humiliation at the hands of Watford, by a scoreline of 4-1 at Vicarage Road, the Manchester United hierarchy finally made the decision to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, weeks too late.

The sacking comes after United have picked up just 4 points from a possible 21 in their last 7 games, suffering heavy defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as a 4-2 loss to Leicester City.

With games against Villareal, Chelsea and Arsenal coming up in the next fortnight, the onus is now on former midfielder Michael Carrick to get the team into shape for the clash.

Mauricio Pochettino in the door?

It is perhaps football’s worst-kept secret that Manchester United are massive admirers of Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino, who spent 5 years in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, guiding them to a Champions League final.

Now with PSG, Pochettino is yet to set the league alight, having been pipped by Lille to the Ligue 1 title last campaign, and knocked out in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Manchester City.

And now, as per BBC Sport’s Simon Stone, he would be “open” to returning to England in charge of Manchester United, with it “not out of the question” that they get their man now, as opposed to the end of the season.

Zinedine Zidane, however, could have a big role to play in the move.

The Frenchman has been out of work since stepping down as Real Madrid boss in July, and is thought to be keen on taking the France job when it becomes available.

However, this is unlikely to be for at least 12 months, after the Qatar World Cup. Meanwhile, PSG are “known to be” big admirers of the France legend.

Should they be able to coax him into taking to head coach role at the Parc de Princes, they could well sanction the departure of Pochettino, handing Manchester United their man.
