An update on the wellbeing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has been forthcoming on Sunday evening.

And the news, unfortunately from a Lilywhites perspective, has proven of an altogether concerning nature.

For those not aware, Republic of Ireland international Doherty, amid something of a new lease of life under the watch of Antonio Conte, was forced into a premature departure from the club’s meeting with Aston Villa on Saturday.

After going to ground with a knee problem inside the opening exchanges at Villa Park, the former Wolves star did his utmost to carry on, but was ultimately left with little choice but to limp back to the dressing room, aided by the visitors’ medical team.

The Spurs faithful, in turn, had since been left with an anxious wait to discover the extent of their in-form defender’s injury.

And, late on Sunday, precisely that has been forthcoming online.

As per a report from the reliable Alasdair Gold of football.london, Doherty is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign and beyond:

”football.london understands that scans on the injury have now revealed that the Republic of Ireland international has ruptured his medial collateral ligament in his knee and will be out for up to 12 weeks.”

Reguilon returns

Whilst Doherty’s injury, in and of itself, of course marks a major blow for Tottenham, Antonio Conte and co. will no doubt be thankful that the Irishman’s issue did not arrive a couple of weeks earlier.

This comes with left-wing-back options Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon having both only just recovered from their own respective spells on the treatment table.

One, if not both defenders, will therefore be expected to feature prominently over the remaining weeks of the campaign.
