Griezmann remarks to Jota yellow

Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners against Atlético Madrid at Anfield tonight in front of a packed house and confirmed their passage into the knockout stage of the Champions League after taking a commanding 7-point lead in Group B with two matches remaining, but Atléti star Antoine Griezmann took to social media to criticize the match officiating on the evening.

Griezmann drew attention to the high boot perpetrated by Liverpool‘s Diogo Jota on Atléti right-back Kieran Trippier that only saw the Portuguese international presented with a booking.

A similar offense committed by Griezmann in the last clash between the pair at the Wanda Metropolitano on matchday three two weeks ago saw the French international given a straight red and his marching orders.

It was not the only poor officiating choice on the night either, when Michael Oliver sent of Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels in a bizarre call that has the Premier League ref under huge amounts of scrutiny in the wake of the Bundesliga outfits loss against Dutch giants Ajax.

Rocky start for a returning hero

It has been a rocky start for Antoine Griezmann in his second shot of life at Atlético Madrid after he returned to the Spanish capital in the wake of an otherwise failed expedition in Barcelona.

In eleven La Liga appearances this season, the Frenchman has bagged just a solitary goal and an assist to his name, both of which came within the last two league outings.

His contributions in Champions League have been far more considerable, however, with three goals in three appearances in the group stage including a brace against Liverpool before his sending off.

But according to boss Diego Simeone, the “real Antoine Griezmann” was seen at the weekend during Atléti’s home win against visiting upstarts Real Betis.

Though he was unable to feature tonight, should Griezmann be on the cusp of finding form for Atléti, his return to action will be that much sweeter.
