Giovanni van Bronckhorst has hailed his ‘brave’ Rangers stars for their draw in Lyon – but admits they could have won the game.
Gers concluded their Europa League Group A campaign with a creditable 1-1 draw in France.
The Ibrox club had already qualified for the knockout play-offs ahead of the final fixture and they were boosted further when attacker Scott Wright’s deflected shot four minutes before the interval gave the Light Blues the lead.
Gers defender Calvin Bassey inadvertently turned a shot from 18-year-old Rayan Cherki into his own goal three minutes after the restart but there were no more goals in a mostly low-key second half.
Van Bronckhorst had won four out of four since taking over from Steven Gerrard, but he was not too concerned about the draw as he enjoyed another look at what he has at his disposal against a side who had won five out of five in the group, including a 2-0 win in Govan.
“We’re very happy with the performance,” he said. “Away from home in Europe can be really tough, it was a tough opponent we faced but I felt we were very brave today.

“In ball possession we like to play from the back and we had the right solution many times. Overall I’m really happy with the performance and maybe we were dominant but in the second half we didn’t create as many chances in the end.
“We had some dangerous crosses but also Lyon had some chances. I’m very happy with the message we showed as a team.
“We came here not to defend but to play our game and to develop our team. It’s only my fifth game in charge and I’m happy they’re picking up my style of play so in that aspect I’m very happy with the performance.”
