June 4 – Follow the stats and France will win the Euro 2020 championships. Second favourites are Germany, followed by Spain and England.
The CIES Football Observatory has released a ranking of Euro 2022 teams based on the number of players in national teams coming from the most competitive clubs. The premise is that players from the teams that win the most in the most competitive competitions will carry that winning habit with them to their national teams.
The CIES rankingcompares squads “from the perspective of the average sporting level of the teams of employment of players in squads.”
The analysis also looks at the average number of domestic league minutes played since 1 September 2020 finding that English players had racked up more pitch time (2,496 minutes per player), while the lowest was measured for Ukraine (on average only 1,390 domestic league minutes per player).
“With an average age of 24.9 years on June 1st, Turkey is the youngest team. It outranks England (25.2 years) and Wales (25.5 years). At the opposite end we find Sweden (29.2 years), followed by Belgium (29.1 years) and Slovakia (28.2 years). Born on the 16th October 2003, the Polish Kacper Kozlowski is the youngest player, while the Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg (22.09.1982) is the oldest,” report the CIES authors.
Comparing the CIES ranking to the FIFA rankings, Belgium are ranked number 1 by FIFA, but only eight by the CIES.
France are ranked second in the world by FIFA with England 4th, Portugal 5thand Spain 6th. Germany are ranked a lowly 12th, but ranked second by the CIES the stats suggest they should not be under-estimated.
