CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati defender Ronald Matarrita and the Costa Rican national team begin their quest to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup this week. Matarrita was called up to represent the Costa Rican national team in the upcoming World Cup qualification matches, the federation announced last week.
It will mark the third World Cup qualification call up for Matarrita, who joined FC Cincinnati from New York City FC via trade this season. He appeared in all four of Costa Rica’s 2021 Gold Cup contests, starting three and notching an assist in the competition. The 27-year-old has made 42 total appearances in his international career.
Matarrita will miss FC Cincinnati’s match on Sept 4 against Inter Miami CF while Costa Rica travel to Panama and then host Mexico and Jamaica from Sept 2 through Sept 8.

Sept 2 – Panama (A), 9:05 p.m. ET – Paramount+
Sept 5 – Mexico (H), 7 p.m. ET – CBS Sports Network
Sept 8 – Jamaica (H), 9 p.m. ET
FC Cincinnati return to play at TQL Stadium on Saturday, September 4 against Inter Miami CF, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET.
