Ekstein, 30, said he and McCarthy have been talking since 2019 while he was playing overseas for Sabail FK in the Azerbaijan Premier League.

When the opportunity arose to sign him, Benni McCarthy jumped at the chance.

“Coach Benni McCarthy and I have been talking since 2019. He always told me that he wants to coach me and it has always been my wish to play for him,” Ekstein told Soccer Laduma.

“I’m here now, I need to work and him being a fan of my football doesn’t mean my place is guaranteed. I have to work hard and not disappoint him and it doesn’t put me under pressure, I just need to work hard.

“I would like to see AmaZulu win one or two trophies, especially for the performance from last season, the way the team is managed, they deserve a trophy.

“I want to see the team win, it is not about me, it is about a collective (effort) and my personal achievement doesn’t really matter. I just want to contribute to the success of this club.”

Ekstein previously played 94 matches for Kaizer Chiefs in all competitions between 2014 and 2019.
