According to The Mirror, Leeds United and Everton are both keen on signing Real Madrid defender Marcelo this summer.

Marcelo, 33, is ‘not in the plans’ at Real Madrid and will be sold this summer in order to raise funds and clear the decks at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Marcelo’s agents are now seeking a new club, and both Everton and Leeds have been approached about a deal.

Everton lead the race

The report suggests that it’s Everton who are most likely to sign Marcelo in a deal worth around £5million.

That would of course see Carlo Ancelotti sell a player to the Toffees just weeks after leaving the club for Real.

Some may wonder whether this is needed though, as Everton already have Lucas Digne, and committing big wages to an ageing player is the kind of move they need to avoid.

Do Leeds need Marcelo?

They certainly need to find a new left back, with Ezgjan Alioski set to leave for nothing.

Marcelo doesn’t seem like a particularly ideal fit for Marcelo Bielsa at this point in time though, as he may no longer have the athletic ability needed to play Bielsa’s high-energy style.

How did Marcelo play last season?

Marcelo only started 16 league games last season, registering two assists in those outings for the Spanish giants.

It’s clear that Marcelo, who was hailed as ‘relentless’ by Marca in 2017, is starting to slow down a little – and that’s something that both Leeds and Everton need to be mindful of before making a move.
