The draws for the preliminary round of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup were held on Friday August 13th as Nigeria’s four representatives got to know their fate.
Due to the team’s performance in the past three editions of the CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba was given a bye and automatic qualification for the second round of the qualifiers. The nation’s other representative in the Confederation Cup, Bayelsa United, was drawn against Guinean side AS Ashanti Golden Boys. Bayelsa United face the away leg first between September 10th and 12th before returning for the home leg a week later. In the Champions League draw, NPFL Champions Akwa United was drawn against Algerian side CR Belouizdad, while Rivers United was drawn against Young Africans FC of Tanzania. Akwa United will host the Algerians first between the 10th and 12th of September at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium before travelling for the return leg. Rivers United will face an away match first before hosting their Tanzanian opponents one week later at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
If Akwa United manages to progress to the second and final round, they will face the winners of the tie between Senegal’s Tengueth and Cote d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas. In the case of Rivers United, they will face Ethiopia’s Fasil Kenema SC or Sudan’s Al Hilal. Bayelsa United will face one of Senegal’s Diambars FC or Guinea’s Wakiriya Athletic Club.
