Eddie Jones wields the axe on England’s old-guard in his autumn squad

Eddie Jones refuses to bring back England’s old-guard with the Vunipola brothers, Jamie George and George Ford all OUT of his autumn squad with Marcus Smith, Adam Radwan and Nic Dolly among the youngsters included

  • England have named their squad for this year’s autumn international fixtures
  • Billy Vunipola, Mako Vunipola, Jamie George and George Ford have been left out
  • Marcus Smith, Adam Radwan and Nic Dolly are a host of fresh faces called up
  • Eddie Jones’ side will play Tonga, Australia and South Africa at Twickenham

Eddie Jones resisted calls for the return of his England old-guard with Billy Vunipola, Mako Vunipola, Jamie George and George Ford all out of his official autumn squad.

In a 34-man group set for Tests next month against Tonga, Australia and South Africa Jones is setting his revolution in motion, dropping a quartet with 276 caps-worth of experience.

Maro Itoje is the only Saracens forward included with both Vunipolas and George left out.

Sarries boss Mark McCall said he would be ‘amazed’ if those were omitted after they starred in the 71-17 thrashing of Bath on Sunday – and they have been.

As Sportsmail revealed Nic Dolly is in with George out; the Leicester hooker born in Australia who has scored five tries in five Premiership games for Tigers in a superb start to the season.

Jamie Blamire from Newcastle is also preferred to George, with a fitness update due on Exeter hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie who limped off against Wasps on Saturday.

With no Billy Vunipola, Sam Simmonds, Alex Dombrandt and Callum Chick are the out-and-out No 8s with Tom Curry expected to be used there too.

Marcus Smith, as Sportsmail revealed, looks set for the No 10 shirt. He is in as the main fly-half option, as Ford misses out, with Harry Randall and uncapped Raffi Quirke vying with Ben Youngs for the scrum-half berth.

In the backs Tommy Freeman, the 20-year-old Northampton Saints full-back is included, with no place for Harlequins’ Australian-qualified Louis Lynagh who was in the wider squad picked last month.

Jones said: ‘This is a young but very good, talented squad who have all earned their places. It is one of the most competitive squads I have ever picked.

‘There are a number of disappointed players who haven’t been selected, but they know what they need to do and no door is closed to any player.

‘We’re looking forward to three tough Test matches. Tonga always play a strong, physical game and Australia and South Africa have had extended periods together and will be a good challenge for us.

‘Our aim each week will be to get better and better as we work towards the Rugby World Cup in 2023.’

Mark Atkinson, retained from Jones’ 45-man squad from September, is the other uncapped back included.

Newcastle’s flying wing Adam Radwan is picked alongside stalwarts Jonny May and Anthony Watson, with Leicester’s Freddie Steward and Saracens’ Max Malins options at full-back with George Furbank and Freeman from Saints. Henry Slade and Manu Tuilagi will battle for centre shirts.

The last man to captain England, Lewis Ludlow from Gloucester, does not make the squad despite a strong start to the season for the Cherry & Whites.

Lewis Ludlam, at Northampton, does though, joining club-mate Courtney Lawes, Sam Underhill from Bath, Sale’s Tom Curry and Leicester’s George Martin as back-row options.

At prop Joe Marler could win his first England cap since last December, joined by Trevor Davison, Will Stuart, Kyle Sinckler and Ellis Genge. In the second-row Jonny Hill and Charlie Ewels are retained.
