Earthquakes Sign Costa Rica National Team Defender Francisco Calvo

January 26, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed defender Francisco Calvo to a contract for the 2022 Major League Soccer season with a club option for 2023. Calvo is a former MLS All-Star and competed for Costa Rica at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“Adding a proven central defender was a priority for us this offseason,” said Earthquakes General Manager Chris Leitch. “Francisco possesses a significant amount of experience in Major League Soccer and with the Costa Rica National Team, and his signing makes us both deeper and more versatile heading into 2022.”

Calvo, 29, has competed in Major League Soccer for the past five seasons, totaling 10 goals and nine assists in 122 appearances (119 starts). He joined Minnesota United FC ahead of their inaugural season in 2017 and served as their first team captain. During his first two seasons with Minnesota, Calvo started 53 matches and tallied four goals and four assists, earning a selection to the 2018 MLS All-Star team.

After starting seven of Minnesota’s first nine matches in 2019, Calvo was traded to Chicago Fire FC and proceeded to make 21 starts in 23 total appearances for his new club, finishing with a career-high four goals that season. He then started 22 of Chicago’s 23 matches during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season before making 17 appearances (16 starts) in 2021. As he did with Minnesota, Calvo served as team captain in Chicago.
