Dermot Desmond’s Celtic transfer role as majority shareholder helps ramp up recruitment drive

Dermot Desmond has been directly involved in Celtic ’s recruitment drive.

Celtic are in the midst of a rebuild under Ange Postecoglou as he tries to whip them into shape in order to reach the Champions League group stages and battle Rangers for the Premiership title.

And the Daily Record reports that majority shareholder Desmond has been taking an active role in recruitment.

The Irish businessman has been talking with top figures in the transfer market as the Hoops look to bring players in.

Desmond faced the fans’ wrath last season for not being hands on as Celtic failed spectacularly to clinch a historic tenth title in succession.

But he’s been more active this summer in what has been a time of great change at Parkhead.

Not only has Postecoglou come in, but new CEO Dominic McKay replaced the long-serving Peter Lawwell in what is his first role in football.

Postecoglou has already brought in Liel Abada, Carl Starfelt, Kyogo Furuhashi and Osaze Urhoghide.

Kristoffer Ajer has left however after Brentford splashed £13.5million to sign the Norwegian international.

A right back and central midfielder are still on the wishlist, with Sheffield United’s George Baldock thought to be near the top.

Nathan Byrne of derby and Royal Antwerp’s Aurelio Buta are also on the radar.

Postecoglou’s compatriot Aaron Mooy is a midfield option but the money he currently earns in China could be a stumbling block.

A striker is also likely to be required with Brighton planning to step up their efforts to sign Odsonne Edouard.

The Seagulls are expected to offer £20million for the French front man after Celtic’s qualifier with FC Midtjylland is out of the way.

Celtic are also looking at several other loan options including Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers and Manchester City’s Ko Itakura and Yan Couto.
