Roberto De Zerbi has taken charge of Sassuolo for the last time, confirming that he will leave the club after they ended the 2020/21 campaign with a 2-0 win over Lazio on Sunday.

The Neroverdi, despite their final-day win, won’t be playing in Europe next season as Roma clinched their place in the newly formed UEFA Conference League.

“Tonight I want to talk about Sassuolo,” De Zerbi said, asked if he was set to join Shakhtar Donetsk. “I’ve needed the right conditions to show my skills, and I’ve had a great opportunity with Sassuolo.

“I’m leaving because I don’t think that any more can be achieved here.”

The departing boss admitted that he regrets not being able to end the season with European qualification, which he believes his side deserved.

“I think we deserved to qualify for Europe,” De Zerbi said. “Not that Roma didn’t.

“We gave it everything and we miss out due to two goals we didn’t score. That’s my one regret.”
