Chicago Red Stars Draw 1-1 with Washington Spirit

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Chicago Red Stars draw with the Washington Spirit 1-1. An early header from the Red Stars’ Ella Stevens found the back of the net, but a late game equalizer from the Spirit evened up the match.

9′ Ella Stevens escapes the Washington Spirit defense to tap one into the goal with her head after Sarah Griffith assists by bringing the ball into the attacking third

21′ Alyssa Naeher is able to make a diving save keeping the Spirit’s shot out of the net

26′ Sarah Griffith steals it away from the Spirit in their third, runs deep into the Spirit’s box before passing it to Sam Fisher who misses just wide

72′ Kayla Sharples shuts down a run by the Spirit in the Red Stars’ box

81′ Mal Pugh makes a long run up the side of the field, delivering the ball to Sarah Luebbert, whose shot goes just wide of the goal

85′ Washington levels the score when Sullivan’s free-kick set piece finds the head of Staab GAME NOTES:

California natives Jill Aguilera and Sam Fisher stepped in on a short week for the Red Stars and made their first regular season starts. Fisher had a shot on goal during the first half, while Aguilera assisted in midfield for a full 90 minutes.

With three assists this season, rookie Ava Cook leads the league in assists. Tonight, she also had two of the Red Stars’ 5 shots on target.

Luebbert made her 2022 NWSL regular-season debut tonight after subbing in in the second half. The young forward quickly showed her form as she was close to scoring a second goal for the Red Stars.
