According to reports and rumours on social media, Taiwanese international Chen Po-Liang is set to link up with Changchun Yatai on trial.
The domestic transfer window has remained open and Changchun Yatai could still make three more domestic first-team signings before the start of the 2020 season.
Teams in China League One are permitted to register one player from Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan as a native player, meaning they will not count as an import.
31-year-old Chen Po-Liang is a well-known player in the Chinese leagues, having already spent time with Shenzhen and Shanghai Shenhua before joining his current team Zheijiang Greentown.
Since arriving in Zhejiang, Chen has made 132 league appearances for the former Super League club and is currently the team’s captain, playing a pivotal role in the heart of midfield.
Known as Chen Bailiang on the mainland, the defensive midfielder is also the captain for the Chinese Taipei national team, also holding the record for most caps (79) and goals scored (25).
Prior to the start of the 2020 winter transfer window, the centre of midfield was a big area of need for Samvel Babayan’s side, with Zhang Li and Li Guangwen the best options available to the Uzbek manager.
Brazilian Lucas Souza has been brought in to provide a new option, but isn’t likely to play more than 15 games across the season due to the second tier’s rules on import players on match days.
With Aaron Olanare and Serginho likely to be Babayan’s preferred starters, this still leaves him needing some depth and competition at one of the most important positions.
Having Chen Po-Liang join the team would give them arguably a new starter candidate alongside Zhang Li, seeing Li Guangwen pushed further down the pecking order.
His experience in League One, as well as the top tier, will make him a coveted signing and his trial with the club will hopefully just be a formality before seeing the international sign on a permanent basis.
While it is unclear when we will see Changchun Yatai play competitive football this year, the moves that Babayan has made so far seem to have the club trending in a positive direction and a push for promotion should be firmly on the cards from the very first kickoff.
