Chelsea line-up Villarreal forward as back-up option to Erling Haaland

An insight into Chelsea’s centre-forward plans for the summer has been provided recently.

Chelsea’s lack of goals

Chelsea’s 2020/21 under Thomas Tuchel will no doubt go down as one of the greatest starts a manager can have in a job.

In just half a season Tuchel was able to guide Chelsea back into 4th place in the Premier League and secure the club’s second Champions League title by toppling PL champions Manchester City in the final.

Chelsea, though, are still not the finished article, with their real lack of a top goal-scorer no doubt a concern.

Despite hardly featuring in all competitions under Thomas Tuchel, Tammy Abraham remained Chelsea’s top scorer in all competitions in 2020/21, netting 12 goals.

And though Chelsea fans may want to see Abraham back in the side, Tuchel is clearly not a big fan, with it reported that the Blues will listen to offers for the Englishman this summer.

In the Premier League last season meanwhile, Jorginho finished the campaign as the Londoners’ top-scorer with just seven goals – all of which were penalties.

Chelsea eye Moreno as plan B

So, it is quite clear that Chelsea need some fresh legs up top this summer. And the club do seemingly want to address this issue, as it has been claimed that Chelsea’s priority in the market was to sign a striker.

The main name Chelsea have been linked with so far this summer has been Erling Haaland.

It was even claimed earlier this month that talks with the Norwegian were advancing.

However, a report from Spain has now suggested that the Londoners have made a back-up plan in case a move for Haaland does not come to fruition.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Chelsea’s main plan is indeed to sign Haaland.

If that does not come off though, the Londoners are said to have lined up a plan B. And according to the Spanish outlet, that plan B is Villareal’s, Gerard Moreno.

Moreno had a superb 2020/21 which saw him score 30 and assist 11 in 46 outings.

It is added that Thomas Tuchel sees the Spaniard as a good option because he is versatile and can be deployed across the front three. No potential fee is mentioned in the report.
