Chelsea legend Ji named South Korean Women’s Player of the Year

Chelsea midfielder Ji So-yun has been crowned South Korea’s Women’s Player of the Year for the sixth time in her career.

The 30-year-old’s latest personal accolade was announced by the South Korean Football Association in the early hours of this morning.

Ji had previously won the award in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2019. Her latest award comes in a year which has seen her become the all-time record goalscorer for South Korea with 61 goals in 125 appearances. She edged clear of South Korean men’s team forward Cha Bum-kun’s previous record of 58 goals during a 12-0 2022 Asian Cup qualifying victory over Mongolia in September.

For her club, Ji added further silverware to her personal collection in 2021 in the form of another Barclays FA Women’s Super League title along with FA Women’s Continental League Cup and Vitality Women’s FA Cup winners’ medals. The midfielder also featured in a first UEFA Women’s Champions League final for The Blues as they lost 4-0 to FC Barcelona in Gothenburg in May.

Ji’s Player of the Year award comes just days after Chelsea captain Magda Eriksson was named Sweden’s Defender of the Year for 2021. The centre-back has won the award for a second consecutive year with Eriksson being named Defender of the Year in 2020 as well as receiving the Diamond Ball for being the overall top player in that year.
