Chelsea captain will have to hand in shock transfer request to force move

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel’s defensive headache could be about to get worse, with club captain Cesar Azpilicueta reportedly considering leaving the club this summer.

The German has already lost both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen after their contracts at Stamford Bridge expired, and other names such as Marcos Alonso could soon depart too.

Now, though, Azpilicueta could look to force a move away, in a bid to join Barcelona, according to reports.

As per The Sun, the Spanish defender still dreams of a move to Catalunya, but will have to hand in a transfer request if he wishes to complete the move this summer.

Azpilicueta has won every trophy available to him at Chelsea

The 32-year-old’s contract is set to expire next summer, but it had been reported that he may look to secure a move to the Nou Camp a year earlier.

According to report, the Spanish international will have to formally request a move to have any chance of one being allowed.

Azpilicueta joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2012 and has since made more than 470 appearances for the club, winning nine trophies during his time in London.

At present, the Blues are still able to trigger a 12 month extension clause in his contract and tie him to the club for a further year, although it is not yet known whether or not they are planning to do so.

The report claims that Azpilicueta is reluctant to leave Chelsea due to his admiration and loyalty to the club he has spent a decade with, although the prospect of joining Barcelona may prove too tempting.
