Celtic’s ‘major issue’ against Jablonec identified as Michael Stewart runs rule over Europa League win

Michael Stewart reckons defensive frailties will continue to plague Celtic until they upgrade their personnel at the back.

The Hoops picked up their first win under Ange Postecoglou on Thursday but it was far from a flawless display against Jablonec.

They took control of the tie with a 4-2 win in the Czech Republic but their defending left plenty to be desired with the partnership of Carl Starfelt and Nir Bitton in particular raising concerns.

Stewart reckons Postecoglou won’t be 100 per cent happy with what he saw in the Europa League clash but he does have sympathy for the Australian, who is working with a threadbare squad even after five new signings.

When asked if defensive frailties were the main issue on BBC Sportsound, Stewart responded: “I don’t think there’s any question. That is a major issue for Celtic.

“They’re trying to rectify it with Starfelt and Joe Hart but it’s going to take time.

“And more recruits as well, because the quality isn’t at the level that they’re looking for.

“They weren’t great goals to concede and it’s going to be something Postecoglou is concerned about.

“All he can do at the moment is muddle his way through and buy himself time.

“The Jablonec win was a positive, but if results don’t improve, it just continues to heap more and more pressure and makes it more difficult for him to implement what he’s trying to do and sign the players he wants.”
