Fans were left in tears as they said ‘goodbye Mr. Celtic ’ and paid tribute to Bertie Auld at Celtic Park today.

The news hit fans hard as they mourned the legend saying ‘there are less and less of the greats left in Scottish football ’.

They hailed the iconic footballer saying ‘they just don’t make players like him anymore’ as they tied scarves and stripes to the gates of Park Head.

A European Cup winner in 1967, Auld had two spells at Parkhead as a player between 1955 and 1971.

Auld also won the English League Cup with Birmingham City and earned three Scotland caps.

Mum Laura Armstrong, 40, from Cumbernauld, brought her son Damien Armstrong to Celtic park to pay tribute.

She said: “I grew up with my dad telling me about the Lisbon Lions.

“You could come to Celtic Park any day and bump into Bertie and he would always be up for a chat.

“He was great because he really loved talking away to fans, that’s why he was special.

“They just don’t make players like him anymore, he never played for the money he played for the shirt and happiness of playing for Celtic.

“It was so surreal finding out he had died yesterday, it just feels like there is less and less of the greats now.

“It is a really sad day.

“I brought the wee man down because he is at the age he is playing football and is interested in it.

“These days the young ones are all into Ronaldo but you try your best to show the other side and Scottish footballers.”

Paul Brady, 30, from Glasgow also paid tribute to the Celtic Legend.

He said: “I came down to lay a Scarf for Bertie because he is a hero.

“He was one of the Lisbon Lions and there aren’t many of them left now.

“I found out late last night that he had died, it was really sad.

“I think Celtic park will be flooded with tributes. People will keep coming down and laying scarves and tops down all day for him.

“He was Mr Celtic.”

Andy Brian, 35, from Glasgow said: “Bertie was a Lisbon Lion but beyond all that what made him special was the character of the man.

“I think if he wasn’t a lion and just a Celtic player people would react the same way.

“He was a giant of a man who always had a smile on his face and time to talk to fans.

“I personally didn’t get the chance to meet him but would have loved to have had the chance.

“I’m a season ticket holder so I think it is important to stop by and lay a scarf to pay tribute so his family knows we are all thinking about him.

“I shed a tear last night watching videos and remembering his career.

“He was such a funny, well liked and loved man.”
