Speaking at his press conference ahead of his Rennes side’s trip to Monaco tomorrow evening, Bruno Génésio notably discussed the death threats he received from Lyon fans during his time managing there.
His words transcribed in RMC Sport, the coach was asked about the events that marred the Paris FC-Lyon fixture on Friday night and whether he was aware of the presence of hooligans in the Lyon fan groups.
Now third in the league with his new club, Génésio had been the target of local fans during his four-year term with OL. After the incident regarding the death threats, the manager had reported to the authorities, but nothing was done.
“I didn’t know there were hooligans at Lyon. I just know about what I experienced after a certain match in Cyprus [draw against Apollon Limassol in 2017] and that nobody did anything about it. On that day, I received death threats on my phone. My number had been leaked on Twitter. There were insults, death threats.. 400 or 500 messages that I still have, with the numbers I’ve identified.”
“I think there’s too much leniency on the part of the public authorities and the governing bodies of sport. It’s time for it to stop. Decisions have to be taken. In any case, it’s unfortunately too late, but better late than never. It’s up to them now to take on their responsibilities.
