Bragantino defeated Atlético-GO in the Antônio Accioly stadium in Goiânia thanks to a late Weverton goal, extending their lead at the top of the Brazilian Championship. The right-back came on in the 77th minute and scored the game’s only goal five minutes later, putting an end to the Dragons’ 19-game unbeaten record at home.
Bragantino now leads the Brazilian Championship with 17 points from five wins and two draws, a four-point lead over Athletico-PR.
Dark horses for the title?
It’s still too early to conclude but as it stands, Bragantino remain the only undefeated team in the competition. Atlético-GO, on the other side, are in seventh place with ten points after only six games in which they won six, drew one, and lost two.
Bragantino have won all of their away matches so far. They have won all four of their away games against Chapecoense, Flamengo, Corinthians, and Atlético-GO. They haven’t been very formidable at home, winning only one of their three home games and drawing the other two.
After going 19 games without losing, Dragon suffered their first home loss and lost their long-held invincibility.
Atlético-GO had the greatest defence in the league before Monday’s game, conceding only two goals in six games, but they were up against the top offensive squad in the league, with 16 goals in six games. Massa Bruta presently has 17 goals, more than double the best defensive team, with only Palmeiras (13 goals) coming close. Atlético-GO has the best defence in the league with three goals conceded.
Coach Maurcio Barbieri’s team gets back on the pitch on Thursday, when they face Ceará at home. Elsewhere, Atlético-GO will take on Atlético-MG also on the same day.
