It’s the international break, which means that there’s no club games to write about – hence a return to the stories that are simmering in the background most of the time.
The idea that Xavi will return to Barcelona as their manager is an old one, and one that comes up every summer – and most winters too.
Mundo Deportivo are today reporting that the Catalan club have restarted their contacts with their former midfielder, with a view to appointing him as soon as Ronald Koeman is gone. That could be soon, but looks likely to be the end of this season – unless things go shockingly badly before then.
So far Xavi has fended off all interest from his alma mater, quite cleverly biding his time as they go through their nightmare in the wake of Lionel Messi’s departure.
We have no doubt Xavi will be back – but as always he’s one step ahead of the game, and he knows this is the worst possible moment to make a return.
