Atlanta United Falls 1-0 to Charlotte FC

April 10, 2022 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Atlanta United FC News Release

ATLANTA – Atlanta United fell to Charlotte FC Sunday afternoon 1-0 at Bank of America Stadium. Despite out-shooting Charlotte and registering a season-high 16 shot attempts, Atlanta was unable to find an equalizer and saw its three-match unbeaten streak come to an end.

Charlotte FC opened the scoring in the 11th minute directly off a corner. Jordy Alcívar played an in-swinging ball that curled into the top corner of the far post to give Charlotte the lead.

Atlanta responded well over the final 30 minutes of the first half. In the 23rd minute, Thiago Almada played Dom Dwyer behind the Charlotte defense that forced Kristijan Kahlina off his line to deny Dwyer. Three minutes later, Almada quickly played a free kick to Andrew Gutman down the left flank where the defender got in on goal and forced Kahlina to make a stop. Then in the 33rd minute, a quick combination of passes freed Marcelino Moreno inside the box with his shot forcing Kahlina to make a diving save.

After controlling much of the second half Atlanta started to pour on pressure over the final 15 minutes in search of an equalizer. It registered five shot attempts in those final minutes with arguably its best opportunity coming from Caleb Wiley in the 88th minute. Overall in the second half, Atlanta out-shot Charlotte 10-5 in the second half and didn’t allow a single shot on target.

Atlanta (3-2-1, 10 points) returns to action Saturday, April 16 when it hosts FC Cincinnati FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (6:00 p.m., Peachtree TV, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
