Aston Villa writer Gregg Evans has named a ‘wildcard’ player who could potentially provide the team with a strong midfield option throughout next season.
It has been reported that the club are after a new midfielder, with Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse recently subject to a £25m bid from Villa.
But while speaking on the 1874 podcast, Evans listed one existing option who could be a surprise alternative for the Villans if they can’t complete a new signing in the area of the pitch.
Evans said: “Let’s not forget, although I’ve not been very kind to him in the performances that he’s played, there is Morgan Sanson who could potentially be a wildcard for Villa this season and come in and do quite well.”
TIF Thoughts on Aston Villa’s midfield situation …
While the club have a number of options in the middle of the park. Dean Smith’s pursuit of Ward-Prowse suggests he isn’t quite fully satisfied with all of his choices.
Lens midfielder Cheick Doucoure is another player to have been linked with a move to Villa of late, and could be on the market for around £12.7m.
But if deals for either of those players cannot be achieved, there is the chance that Sanson gets more of an opportunity to impress.
The 26-year-old midfielder signed a four-and-a-half-year deal last January, but has yet to truly leave his mark on the team – making nine league appearances, though managing just 291 minutes across them (via Transfermarkt).
If Sanson can prove his quality, Villa may not need a new central midfielder after all.
