Arsenal star cools exit speculation and vows to become ‘club legend’ | Shoot

Arsenal’s start to the 2021/22 campaign was nothing short of a disaster, as the Gunners suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Brentford in what was the Bees’ first ever Premier League match.

Mikel Arteta’s side now face Chelsea at the Emirates on Sunday, with new Blues signing Romelu Lukaku likely to be involved.

The Gunners, who were without Piere-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette for the defeat tat Brentford, may also be without their two main strikers for the visit of Chelsea.

Despite the result, it appears that there could be good news for Arsenal fans.

According to the Daily Express, Gabon international Aubameyang is unfazed by speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona, and is instead focussed on securing his status as a legend of the club.

The 32-year-old signed a contract extension less than a year ago that will keep him in North London until 2023 at the earliest, and is prepared to honour that in the hope that he can build a legacy at the club.

Aubameyang failed to score in six pre-season matches.

Despite enduring his worst goalscoring season in a decade, the Gabonese striker still managed to net 15 times for the Gunners, displaying his ability.

The 32-year-old suffered several injuries last season, and was also granted compassionate leave due to his mother’s ill health.

Aubameyang has scored 85 goals in 148 games for the Gunners since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.

The striker missed the defeat to Brentford due to a positive Covid-19 test, along with Lacazette, and the pair also look set to miss the game against Chelsea.

That could mean that youngsters Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli could be given the nod in their absence.
