The January window continues to frustrate many in the Arsenal fanbase and, presumably, also the club hierarchy as a deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur could now be off.

As first reported by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, the situation between all parties had not changed.

Arsenal are only prepared to commit to a six-month loan according to Romano but La Vecchia Signora prefers an 18-month deal which will include 100% of the Brazilian’s salary guaranteed by the Gunners.

David Ornstein shed additional light on the situation soon after for The Athletic. According to his information, Arsenal technical director Edu eventually agreed to an 18-month loan deal which would include a buy option for a fee in the region of €40million; a structure that Juventus sporting director Federico Cherubini was happy to agree to.

But that deal and its structure have since been vetoed by the Arsenal hierarchy, in other words, one of Richard Garlick, Josh Kroenke, and Stan Kroenke. If another more suitable agreement cannot be struck, the club could well fail in its attempt to provide Mikel Arteta with vital midfield reinforcements before the January window closes.

Arsenal turn to fresh names after transfer setbacks

With six days left in the January window, Arsenal is in need of reinforcement not just in the center of the park but also in the number 9 role as the futures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, and Eddie Nketiah seem set in stone.

Now, the club could be set to turn to SSC Napoli striker Victor Osimhen after missing out on number-one target Dušan Vlahović who looks set to complete his expected move to Serie A giants Juventus.

Additionally, the club’s link with interest in Olympique Lyonnais midfield standout Bruno Guimarães also looks to be erased after reports suggest the Brazilian international is on course to make a shock move to cash-loaded Newcastle.

As such, Arsenal may well turn to Aston Villa holding midfielder Douglas Luiz in the wake of the Villains thus far not offering a contract extension at Villa Park.

While it may not be entirely evident what player is now the prime January target for the Gunners, players are certainly required if Arteta is to manufacture a proper run at the top four.
