It had appeared that this summer could be a relatively quiet one for Arsenal, with the Gunners not heavily linked with anyone ahead of the transfer window reopening next month.
Several of the club’s rivals, primarily Manchester City and Chelsea, have been linked relentlessly with a host of Europe’s most coveted talents, however Arsenal never appeared to be in the running for any of them.
It appears now, though, that manager Mikel Arteta will be given a monstrous £250 million budget to rebuild the club’s squad and challenge for the Champions League places next term.
According to 90min, the quarter of a billion pound spending spree will be spearheaded by technical director Edu, and will focus on signing young talent that has the potential to improve for the future.
The North London side will target at least five signings in an effort to improve on last season’s dismal 8th placed finish in the Premier League.
The below-par league campaign, their worst in 25 years, means that the club will have no European football next season and can therefore focus their attention on improving domestically.
The report suggests that the Gunners will initially focus on a goalkeeper, central defender, full-back and two central midfielders.
However, with many of the club’s current squad possibly being moved on, extra funds could be raised and more incomings could well be on the cards.
Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale, Brighton’s Ben White and Leicester’s James Maddison are all believed to be targets for the North Londoners, with central defence a priority after the departure of David Luiz.
Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos will also both return to Real Madrid after the completion of their respective loan deals, and both will need replacing or the club will risk starting the season desperately short in midfield.
The club had reportedly been keen on singing Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia, however the Argentine midfielder eventually opted to join Aston Villa.
30-year-old forward Alexander Lacazette will reportedly be sold this summer, with a younger replacement likely to be sourced in accordance with the club’s policy on signing youngsters.
