Argentinos Juniors beat Rosario Central to stay in title race

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — Kevin Mac Allister and Gaston Veron scored either side of halftime as Argentinos Juniors secured a 2-1 home victory over Rosario Central in Argentina’s Primera Division on Thursday.

Allister bundled home from close range following a corner and Veron doubled the lead by firing in after a Gabriel Avalos headed flick in the 54th minute.

Kevin Ortiz pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 68th minute with a powerful shot from outside the box.

The result leaves Argentinos Juniors fifth in the 28-team standings with 30 points from 18 games, three points behind leaders Atletico Tucuman. Rosario Central are 17th, with 22 points.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Thursday, Independiente won 3-0 at home to Aldosivi and Union Santa Fe clinched a 1-0 home victory over Sarmiento.
