Ange Postecoglou tips Callum McGregor to show Celtic teammates results not good enough

Ange Postecoglou reckons the returning Callum McGregor will show his teammates that recent results have not been good enough.

Captain McGregor was back in the starting lineup for the Bayer Leverkusen mauling following a few weeks out injured.

McGregor missed Celtic’s Real Betis, Livingston, Raith Rovers and Dundee United matches which resulted in only one victory.

But his manager believes the midfielder has the mentality to ensure the rest of the squad understand that losing should not be an option for the Glasgow giants.

“Getting Cal back will help because he’s one that won’t accept what’s going on at the moment,” Postecoglou told the club website.

“But if you look at that starting line-up, there are a lot of guys who are just beginning their Celtic careers and I think, having someone like Cal out there, making them understand what’s expected at this football club in terms of consistent performances and consistent results will help us on Sunday.”

Celts sit sixth in the Premiership table and are yet to win away in the league this season.

But the Australian head coach wants his players to step up this weekend against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Their 4-0 defeat, he says, should be pushed to the back of their minds – but they should still be on the hunt for redemption from that game for their supporters.

“Aberdeen didn’t have a game midweek so they may see some advantage in that,” he added, “but again, all these things become irrelevant. We’ve just to be a stronger team than what we are at the moment in terms of turning our performances into results.

“It’s a tough game but it’s not about lifting the players – you’ve got to take this disappointment and let it fuel you, because it’s not just about being a good football team. There’s got to be something more there.

“We disappointed our fans on Thursday night, so we’ve got to take that anger and disappointment and use it in a positive way and that is, in a tough game away from home, we have to show that we’ve learned the repercussions and the consequences of a night like that and we don’t want to repeat it.

“You don’t want to ignore your opponent because you’ve got to respect what they bring, and they’ve probably had a disappointing start to the season for them, so I guess they’ll be just as motivated.”
