BUENOS AIRES, May 8 (Xinhua) — Julian Alvarez scored late as River Plate clinched second place in Group A of Argentina’s Primera Division on Sunday with a 2-1 home victory over Platense.
Jose Paradela opened the scoring for the hosts in the 11th minute by pouncing on a loose ball inside the penalty area and thumping an unstoppable shot from 15 yards into the top right corner.
Brian Mansilla equalized three minutes later when he tapped in from close range after Horacio Tijanovich intercepted an errant defensive pass.
But Alvarez regained the lead for River by converting from the penalty spot 10 minutes from time following an Ignacio Schor foul on Elias Gomez
The result guaranteed River second spot in the 14-team Group A standings at the end of the regular season, one point behind Racing Club. Platense finished near the foot of the table with 10 points.
In other fixtures on Sunday, Gimnasia won 3-1 at home to Newell’s Old Boys, Defensa y Justicia secured a 1-0 home win over Patronato and Talleres Cordoba prevailed 1-0 at home to Sarmiento.
The top four teams from Group A and B will advance to the quarterfinals.
