Atalanta president Antonio Percassi has warned Liverpool his defender Cristian Romero won’t leave the Serie A outfit on the cheap, with Calciomercato reporting a price tag of £43 million.

Oh Juventus.

As Turin Breaks, Andrea Pirlo must have been wishing the deposed Serie A champions hadn’t allowed Romero to walk Out The Door.

They obviously felt the Argentina international was an Average Man but, after a magnificent debut season at Atalanta, everyone at the Allianz Stadium could do with a Painkiller right now.

Crowned Serie A’s defender of the year at the 2020/21 end-of-season awards, Romero’s stock is rising at a remarkable rate.

So much so that after Atalanta triggered a £14 million option-to-buy clause included in the loan deal that took Romero to Bergamo last summer, an immediate and impressive profit is on the cards.

Liverpool linked to Romero

Calciomercato reports Premier League giants Liverpool have been watching the commanding centre-half for a number of months.

But while Atalanta’s president was unwilling to confirm or deny the existence of that reported £43 million price tag, he did admit Romero would set Liverpool back a princely sum.

“Romero is a very important player, very strong. I like him very much. And today he is at Atalanta – period,” says Percassi.

“How much is he worth? A very large amount.”

Juventus certainly could have done with Romero as they slumped to a dreadful fourth-place finish, behind Atalanta on goal difference.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have already paid a fee in excess of £40 million for one defender this summer – Ibrahima Konate – although there are still doubts surrounding the futures of Joel Matip, Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak.
